Q: Where can I see a PC Quilter?

We do demonstrate the PC Quilter at shows and expeditions, so you may wish to check out our Upcoming Exhibitions on the left hand side. We also have one setup in our Perth office. Customers are more than welcome to come in to see it in action.

Q: How reliable is a PC Quilter?

VERY! The PC Quilter was developed and is manufactured in Port Townsend, Washington. The structural parts of the carriage are custom machined to exacting standards and designed to be incredibly strong. PC Quilter use proven technology for the electronics, and the stepper motors and servos were selected for their reliability.

Q: How much computer knowledge do I need to have?

You must have a working knowledge of Windows to use the PC Quilter including the ability to copy files between directories, use Windows Explorer, organize using subdirectories and respond to dialog boxes. If you intend to design your own patterns, you should also know how to connect and use a scanner, and save an image to the BMP format.

In addition, to edit images for pattern files you should be able to use simple image editing software such as MSPaint and simple text editing software such as WordPad. Being able to lay out geometric patterns on graph paper and entering the corresponding column and row will also be to your advantage. Of course, if you buy all your patterns, you will not need anymore than the basic Windows knowledge, and the ability to edit the text file to change pattern commands.

Q: Are the acrylic tracks somehow also adjustable when changing to the larger bars?

The standard acrylic tracks are 48" long. When working a section you simply work to the end, stop the machine needle down, hold the carriage with one hand and slide the front track all the way to the other side, do the same with the back track and continue on. It actually takes longer to read this explanation than it does to do it.

For those who are using the HomeQuilter in a semi-commercial fashion we do offer longer tracks as an optional extra. However, after a few hours practice most people have no problems with the short tracks and we would strongly urge new users to spend a few weeks with the regular tracks before you consider investing in the long tracks.

Q: What kind of personal computer (PC) do I need?

For the current software version, you will require a 486 with at least 12 Meg of RAM and a parallel port. Your computer must be capable of running Windows 95, 98, XP or ME. For the new GUI version of our software (projected available date: July 2003), you will require a Pentium 1 or better with at least 32 Meg of RAM. The PC Quilter does not work with Windows NT or 2000 as these operating systems were specifically designed for business environments. The PC Quilter cannot be used with the MAC or the Linux OS.

Q: What versions of Windows does the PC Quilter need to work?

The PC Quilter software works under Windows 95, 98, ME and XP. Please remember that you will need a parallel port on your computer (printer port) to use the hardware portion of the PC Quilter. It does NOT work with Windows 2000 or NT, nor does it work with Linux or on a Mac..

Q: How can I talk to real live users about the PC Quilter quality, reliability etc?

There is a PC Quilter Users Group on Yahoo where the product is regularly discussed and users exchange ideas. Many potential users find this VERY helpful. You can access it by going to groups.yahoo.com/group/PCQ/ and signing up for the group.

Q: What kind of warranty and support is included with the PC Quilter?

The PC Quilter comes with a one year warranty if used for personal use or even if shared by two people. If it is used for commercial use or a large group of quilters such as a club, the warranty is for 90 days. One year of software/technical support is provided for one INDIVIDUAL who has read/understand the instruction book and who knows windows reasonably well.

Our technical support policy REQUIRES that you have read the manual FIRST and that you are unable to resolve your issue from information in the manual. Also, while we will be very happy to answer a minor technical point about Windows as it relates to the PC Quilter, we WILL NOT teach you Windows. You MUST be sure you have the appropriate level of ability with Windows before you order the PC Quilter. If you are in doubt, we can help you determine if your level of skill is sufficient.

Q: Is the PC Quilter difficult to set up and get working?

Usually no - most users get it set up and working in a couple of hours. Occasionally, the user encounters problems because of PC issues or the PC Quilter needs an adjustment because of problems during shipping. In a couple of rare cases, when something went wrong during shipping - we sent a new one and in another case, a part to fix the problem.

Q: Does the PC Quilter have a Stitch Regulator?

You home computer works with the PC Quilter to regulate stitch speed, stitch length and the patterns that is being sewn. There is no need for a separate stitch regulator.
