Between the 17th and early 18th century, many have patented with connections to the mechanical sewing but was not successful with their inventions. Only in 1846, the first American patent was issued to Elias Howe for "a process that used thread from two different sources." Howe's machine had a needle with an eye at the point. The needle was pushed through the cloth and created a loop on the other side; a shuttle on a track then slipped the second thread through the loop, creating what is called a lockstitch.

Howe struggled to promote his invention and moved over to London to further develop the machine. Having been unsuccessful, he returned to America and found that his invention was adopted by others.

Isaac singer invented the up-and-down motion mechanism and sewing machines went into mass production when Singer built the first commercially successful machine powered by a foot treadle (previous machines were all hand-cranked). Singer's machine used the same lockstitch patented by Howe. Howe later sued Singer for patent infringement and won in 1854. Singer had then to pay royalties to Howe. Singer went on to develop the continuous stitch machine and he founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which became one of the world's largest manufacturers of personal sewing machines. The first electric sewing machine, a Singer, for the home was introduced in 1889.

Both Singer and Howe ended their days as multi-millionaires. It is still in doubt who actually invented the sewing machine but without the work of those long-dead pioneers, the dream of mechanized sewing would never have been realized.

Companies like Mitsubishi, Juki, Brother and Pegasus have all started assembling their sewing machines in different parts of China and some have even established joint ventures with the local factories there.

Before the year 2000, the overall demand for industrial sewing machine was relatively high. The figures were between 700,000 to 800,000 units a year of which many were supplied by Japan but after the year 2000, it was a whole different story.

As seen in the graph across, the production of industrial sewing machine dropped from 616,700 units in the year 2000 to 455,800 units in 2001, that's about 26% drop within a year. This is due to the popular demand of Chinese domestic sewing machine. From there on, Japanese manufacturer focused on China not only for its low production cost but to also gain sales approval of their sewing machine in the Chinese market by the Chinese government.

The Chinese market grew and the Japanese manufacturers saw it's potential and more advanced over to China. Today, it is said that about 2,000 Japanese companies are manufacturing in China and about the same figures were reported for Taiwan and Korea.

It is not only a number of sewing factories with thousands of sewing machines that has move on to China; it is a substantial part of the sewing industry itself. With this it has caused the huge increase of the total operating sewing machine in Chinese factories.

At present, the largest market for Japan is China and Japanese manufacturers' current aim is to increase production models in China with final manufacturing done in their own country.
